The short answer
When melatonin does not seem to work, the cause is usually how it is taken, not the melatonin itself. The four most common reasons are a dose that is too high, poor timing, screens after you take it, and expecting it to fix something it cannot, like a racing mind.1,2,3
Most people do better with a lower dose, taken at the same time every night, with the phone out of the bedroom. If you still cannot sleep after a few weeks, see your doctor.
"Melatonin just does not work for me"
A coworker of mine was under a lot of pressure at work and could not sleep. She tried melatonin and told me it did not work. When we talked, two things stood out. She was taking 10 mg, because she thought more was better. And after she took it, she would lie in bed scrolling on her phone to wind down.
She made three changes. She put her phone outside the bedroom. She dropped to a lower dose. And she went to bed at the same time every night. That is what finally made the difference.
Her story covers two of the four reasons below. Read through them and see which ones sound like you.
Which of these sounds like you?
Reason 1
You are taking too much
The number one reason I see is that people take far too much. They think more is better, so they take 5 or 10 mg. Then they wake up groggy and decide melatonin does not work for them. Usually the dose was the problem, not the melatonin.
Signs this is you: you take 5 mg or more, you wake up foggy, or you have vivid dreams.
Why it backfires: in a study of adults over 50, 0.3 mg was enough to bring night levels back to normal. A 3 mg dose pushed levels far above normal, and they stayed high into the next day.1 Labels are not always right either. In a 2023 test of 25 melatonin gummies, 22 did not match their labels.4
What to try: a lower dose. Read how much melatonin should I take and how much melatonin is too much.
Reason 2
Your timing is off
Signs this is you: you take it once you are already lying awake, at a different time each night, or when you wake at 3am.
Why it backfires: melatonin is a signal that tells your body night has started. It is not a sleeping pill.2 It works best taken about 30 minutes before bed, at the same time every night.1 A dose in the middle of the night can still be working when your alarm goes off.
What to try: pick a bedtime, take melatonin 30 minutes before it, and keep that time every night. See how long melatonin lasts.
Reason 3
Your phone is working against it
Signs this is you: you scroll, watch, or read on a screen in bed after you take melatonin.
Why it backfires: screen light tells your brain it is still daytime. In a Harvard study, people who read on a backlit screen before bed took longer to fall asleep and made less melatonin than people who read a printed book.3 You are sending your body two opposite signals at once.
What to try: put your phone outside the bedroom and read a printed book instead. More ideas in tired but cannot sleep.
Reason 4
You are asking it to fix something it cannot
Melatonin cannot fix a racing mind. If stress or anxiety is keeping you up, you need to deal with that too, like writing down your worries before bed or trying CBT for insomnia.
Signs this is you: your mind races at night, you wake with night sweats, you snore loudly, or you drink alcohol in the evening.
Why it backfires: melatonin helps with timing. It does not calm worry, cool a hot flash, or open a blocked airway. Alcohol also breaks up sleep in the second half of the night.5 For long term sleep trouble, doctors recommend cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia as the first step.6
What to try: write tomorrow's to do list before bed, skip evening alcohol, and see your doctor if it lasts more than a few weeks. Read melatonin and alcohol and why you keep waking up at 3am.

Quick reset: try this for two weeks
- Lower the dose. Many adults do well in the 0.3 mg to 3 mg range.1
- Take it 30 minutes before bed, at the same time every night.
- Phone out of the bedroom. Dim the lights for the last hour.
- Same bedtime and wake time, even on weekends.
- Skip alcohol in the evening.
- Check in after two weeks. If nothing has changed, talk to your doctor.
Talk to your doctor if
- Your sleep trouble has lasted more than a few weeks.
- You snore loudly or stop breathing in your sleep.
- You have night sweats, hot flashes, or a racing heart at night.
- You feel low or anxious most days.
- You take other medicine that makes you sleepy.
Where Driffly fits
Built around the first two reasons
When I chose Driffly's formula, I started with dose and timing. Each strip has 1 mg of melatonin, the same amount behind the European Union's approved sleep claim,7 with valerian root, lavender, chamomile, and hibiscus to support a calm wind down.* It melts on your tongue, so it fits into your bedtime routine with no water needed.
In a survey of 23 customers who finished 30 nights with Driffly, 21 said they woke up without grogginess.8 This was a small customer survey, not a clinical study.
- 1 mg of melatonin in each strip.
- Melts on your tongue. No water and no sugar.
- Take it 30 minutes before bed, at the same time every night.
Every order comes with a 30 night money back guarantee.
Common questions when melatonin is not working
Why does melatonin not work for me?
The most common reasons are a dose that is too high, taking it at the wrong time, screens after taking it, or a sleep problem melatonin cannot fix, like stress, hot flashes, or sleep apnea.1,3
Should I take more melatonin if it is not working?
Usually no. A higher dose stays in your blood longer and can leave you groggy the next day.1 Try a lower dose at a steady time first, and ask your doctor before going higher.
Can melatonin keep you awake?
It does not keep most people awake. If you feel more alert after taking it, check the timing, the dose, and whether you are on a screen afterward.3
Does melatonin stop working over time?
There is little sign that people build a tolerance. In studies of up to 6 to 12 months, people did not have withdrawal when they stopped.9 If it seems to stop working, look at changes in your routine, stress, or health.
How long should I try melatonin before I give up?
Give a steady routine about two weeks. If your sleep has not improved, stop and talk to your doctor.
